All About Chairs
A children’s book about chairs and where you’re supposed to sit. Probably for ages 2-10
It would talk about how we all have seats that we sit in every day. Like the car, the couch, the dinner table, at the playground, at church, at school, at the doctor, or in the waiting room. Some of these seats are assigned to us and some of them we get to choose where we want to sit. Maybe we have a favorite spot on the couch or we like sitting in the third seat back on the bus. We chose these seats. They’re our favorite and are comfortable and safe to us.
We also have seats that are assigned to us like at school the teacher may assign seats alphabetically. Sometimes we choose seats that are comfortable to other people and we learn to become comfortable with them like at church or on the playground or in a waiting room. For these seats, if we choose to change spots it could make another person uncomfortable especially if they’ve sat in that seat for a long time. It may be helpful to listen to them when they ask you to move and you may choose to move so they can become comfortable. But other times, you need to sit in their seat. Maybe you’re new to the school and don’t know about the alphabetical seating so you sit in the first row because you need to see the board. But you’ve taken someone else’s spot. They could get upset at this and it may be best for you to move. But maybe they could find a new spot or the whole class could shift and everyone could find a new spot. Yes, this does disrupt class for a little bit but then everyone can get back to learning.
You don’t have to feel shame to ask for what you need or asking them to stay in this seat, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just a seat. Some people forget that. And sometimes you may choose to stick with the seat that’s most comfortable to you because you like comfort. That comfortable spot can also become uncomfortable. Imagine your couch breaks because you’ve sat in the same spot for too long. You could change seats or you could get a new couch and sit in the same spot all over again. It’s up to you. You get to choose.
*This needs to be fleshed out more. I know it’s got societal implications in here and it’s not just a bout chairs and where to sit.
