A Bored Vampire
This is a world where people have had their emotions turned off. Not sure how that’s done, but it’s done. Everyone, since the time they’re born, has had their emotions turned off and stabilized so that they are complacent and feel nothing. Not happy, not sad, not mad. They just exist.
Our main character, probably a woman cuz that’s the main type of character I write, works at a job that’s mainly punching numbers. Like life insurance and updating people’s information. It’s a boring job but she doesn’t care because it’s work. She’s told to go to an old person’s house and make sure all their information is correct. Try to sell them on will documentation and the like. There are some rumblings that those that have gone to this individual’s house to sell things/update information, the insurance broker soon quits their job and is no longer seen again.
She goes to the house and is met by an individual who looks to be in their 30-40s. She is confused as this individual has the name of the person she’s looking for. Turns out this is the correct individual. This person is a vampire who lives basically forever. They are filled with life and want to know what her desires are. What it is that she longs for. When she has no answers, the vampire turns her emotions back on. Not sure how this would happen. But she feels an overwhelming flood of fear and elation and sadness and all the things at once. She leaves.
She tries to go about her day like normal but finds everything so much different. Food tastes different - it’s depressing. It didn’t have to taste good to people who didn’t care, so it didn’t. But the world itself was like discovering everything for the first time again. She ends up back at the vampire’s house wanting to know what happened to her.
The vampire has lived for centuries and has helped steer the country into riches and poverty. They helped design the tech that allowed everyone to turn off their emotions. They did this for their own selfishness thinking if people would stop reacting and feeling then maybe they could eat more frequently and better. That didn’t turn out to be true at all. Now the vampire lives alone trying to get anyone who comes across them to feel something at all. They live in a world of color, music, drink, food, and vibrance.
Problems with this: I don’t know what the real conflict is. I think it has to do with the vampire. They feel everything for that whole country while taking on the responsibility for the people’s overall spiral downward. Really this is a look at depression and how to get out of it. The vampire is in it even though everyone else is a physical manifestation of it.
